1950s was a big decade for sports. With advancements in technology, people could now watch sport performances at home on televisions or hear results on the radio. Another big reason why this decade was a big advancement for sports in Australia was because in 1956 Melbourne hosted the first Olympic games ever in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere.
Australians greatly participated in sports after WWII. With Australia's increasing wealth and leisure time even working class were able to do sports such as tennis, golf and bowels (once sports once the wealthy could do). Due the high number of migrants moving into Australia, many new sports such as soccer and gymnasics and volleyball became popular in Australia.
The Melbourne Olympic games was a huge success. Australians were thrilled that they were able to host and pull or such a major international event and impress the world with their athletic ability. The Olympic games help create a sense of national pride in Australians. Instead of thinking of themselves as an extension of Britian, Australian finallly felt they had demonstarted a sense of self-pride, pride in their own flag making them feel like an independent country.
The whole world was exposed to Australia through the use of television. Australians who couldn't attend the events could watch at home on their television or watch on TV sets in shop windows.
