"Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening."

The 1950s was a time of of luxury and style. Women began spending me and demanded new fashion. This started an evolution in fashion. Due to Australia's wealth economy new synthetic materials were being made like polyster which revolutionised the fashion industry for the fabric was easy to care for and non-creasing.
Australian women started wanting the same fashion as celebrities they saw in Vogue magazines. During this time women started wearing pencil or shirtwaist dresses, stocking and gloves and hats. Floral, polka-dots, or cherries printed fabrics were a favourite choices for day wear.
Fashion durign this time was influenced by the Americans, movie stars and music especially rock & roll.
A fashion dress during the 1950s was the "halter dresses". This dress was the famous white dress wore by Marilyn Monroe designed by Travilla. This dress featured fitting bodices with straps around the neck allowing the bosom to be accentuated.
Another famous dress during this time was the "pencil dress". This dress emphasized the female form with an open neck, cinched wasit and narrow hips.
